Simple SEO Tips - Important Backlinking Factors for New Websites

If you have created a new site and aim to get search engine traffic, you will need to get plenty of good backlinks to your site to get it to rank high in the search engines.

If your home page is the page that is optimized for potentially the highest volume keyword, that page is what should receive the most links. However you don't want to neglect your other pages - you should send plenty of backlinks to your internal pages as well (known as deep links). Google looks for natural backlinking patterns, and sites that have all their links pointed to the homepage don't look natural in the eyes of Google and could get penalized.

Also you want to use a variety of backlinking sources. You should mix it up between social bookmarking, article directories, press releases, rss feed directories, blog commenting, blog networks, forums, and profile links. Again, sites that have all their links from primary one source don't appear natural as well.

Another factor is your link velocity, which is how quickly you get backlinks to your sites. Sites must age awhile before they are trusted by the search engines. If a new site suddenly gets a whole bunch of backlinks right away, Google will suspect link spam and most likely penalize or deindex the site because it cannot be well known enough to get a lot of backlinks when it is that new. Just start with a modest link velocity - no more than a couple dozen links per week, and once your site is a couple months old you can gradually increase the link velocity.

Finally, you want to aim for high quality backlinks. You can get these from sites that are high in page rank. Also you want to get more links that are "do follow" and limit links that are "no follow". If a link is no follow, then there won't be any link juice that will be passed on to your site.

As you see your site move up the rankings, you want to continue to add backlinks. To get an idea of how many links you need to rank at the top, you can use the SEO for Firefox toolbar or Market Samurai to determine the number of links and quality of links your competitors have. If you get more high quality backlinks than the competition, it's just a matter of time before you outrank them.
